A SANDSTORM BLEW UP IN THE STAGE - STAGE 5 - 6TH JANUARY 2022

The fifth stage of the 44th Dakar Rally was a loop in Riyadh, the capital, and had a special change: the bikes and quads had a different route to the cars, light prototypes, SSVs and trucks. The route for the bikes was 345 kilometres of special stage, with 216.2 kilometres of liaison, very fast tracks, dunes and demanding navigation.

In addition, a sandstorm blew up and the last part of the special stage had to be shortened for safety reasons because helicopters cannot fly in these conditions. Therefore, the following results are provisional, while waiting for the organization to publish the definitive results with all the changes applied.

Joan Pedrero #17: 26th (and the second-best Spaniard).
Daniel Nosiglia #54: 31st.
Pato Cabrera #50: 45th
Marc Calmet #108: 53rd

Quotes from the riders:

Daniel Nosiglia #54: "It was a difficult day for me. I had a lot of dust until kilometre 300 because I had riders in front of me, and it was difficult to overtake them. There were a lot of rocks, and it was dangerous to overtake. It was a dangerous stage with a lot of crashes. I'm happy to be back at the finish".

Joan Pedrero #17: "I'm happy. We had a lot of stones at the beginning and then a sand storm. You couldn't see the tracks well because they were covered with sand. The bike is perfect, and physically, I feel very good".

Marc Calmet #108: "Today was a very fast day, as usual. Today there were a lot of CAPs and top speed. We were in some very rocky valleys, and we crossed dry rivers where there are a lot of stones under the sand. We had to be very careful. Today, it was important to regain confidence after two days of mechanical problems".

Pato Cabrera #50: "Today I felt very comfortable. I overtook the rider in front of me, and from then on I was alone for almost the whole stage. I was able to go at a good pace, safely, sailing well. Likewise, I didn't have any issues and I really enjoyed the stage".
